As Michigan begins to see the waning of fall and the promise of winter right around the corner, there are some ways you can invigorate your autumn job search. While you bundle up to face the increasingly colder temperatures each day, consider these tips for boosting your job search. Be prepared for the holidays and 2013.

  1. Targeting. The first step is to create a list of your target companies. You want to have as much up front information as you can find, including the names of hiring managers and other key people in the organization. Monster and LinkedIn offer detailed information on most companies so this research doesn’t have to be very time-consuming. Once you’ve narrowed down the list of firms you would like to work for it is time to find contact information for their human resources department. You also want to check your networks to find out if any of your contacts know people within the company.
  2. Determine their needs. After you have a list of the companies you would like to work for, it is time to discover how you can be of service to them. Research their websites and job openings. Research the companies through your local news agencies. Follow them on social media to better understand their needs and company culture.
  3. Informational interviews. Now is the time to reach out to individuals within the organization. Before you ask them for a job out right offer to meet them for an informal interview to better understand their company or industry. This step will help you build a network and uncover any possible leads within the organization.
  4. Engage. Begin to interact with industry leaders through social media. Read their blogs and comment. Follow them on Twitter and “retweet” important information.  By being engaged with their content and their company you are showing interest. This information can help you when you are able to schedule a job interview at the organization.
