Understanding how hiring managers use online social media is the first step in knowing where to go to get your next job. Communication is changing in the 21st century and showing up at the company’s door with your resume is not getting you the job. You may be on LinkedIn and Facebook but recruiters are becoming more creative about where to find candidates. Here are four places you want to be on the internet.
- Your Blog. Recruiters are looking for leaders in their industry. Rather than focusing a company’s hiring strategy you should develop your own brand which will attract recruiters to you instead. Create your blog and brand to position yourself as an expert.
- Job feeds on Twitter or Facebook. Companies are leveraging technology to get their jobs in front of as many potential candidates as possible. They are creating job feeds that launch right into their own applicant tracking system from the social media site which eliminates complex steps to applying for their jobs. Decide what companies are most important to you and follow their feeds.
- LinkedIn. According to a survey by Jobvite in 2012, 93% of recruiters are using LinkedIn to find candidates for their open positions. It is important to create a complete profile to include your photograph and a well worded headline. You should also participate in groups. When joining LinkedIn groups don’t focus only on those that are industry specific. Join groups for your university alumni organization and interests that reflect your hobbies. You never know where hiring managers are spending their time.
- Consider Instagram. You may not have thought of it before but many companies, including Starbucks, are using the popular photo sharing site to find candidates for their open positions. Instagram uses hashtags, much like twitter, to help people find the photographs they want. Recruiters can find passive candidates by searching for hashtags that are applicable to their needs. This will lead to candidates who weren’t expecting to be found but may be on the market for a new job.
