There is truly only one question your resume must answer. “Why do I want to hire this person?” Why are you a better fit than the rest of the resumes that the recruiter has received for their job posting? You only have a few seconds for your resume to make an impression. Here are the things to keep in mind to answer this question for the hiring manager.

  • What are you achievements? A recruiter wants to know how you have progressed in your career. Most companies are looking for individuals who want to grow within the organization so they don’t want to see someone who has remained stagnate in their roles over the years. Show how you have received promotions within the same company or how your transition to a new company gave you more responsibilities.
  • What have you accomplished? Real numbers and statistics are the one piece of information that can set you apart from your competition. How did you save your company money? How were you able to alter a process to make your department more efficient? Include these things prominently.
  • What awards did you receive? How was your work appreciated and recognized by your previous employers. Did you win employee of the month? Were you awarded an outstanding performance bonus? Were you given a raise for a job well done even during the economic downturn?
  • What are your proficiencies? A recruiter still wants to know that you are capable of the job for which they are recruiting. What is your level of experience? How were you able to use your skills to make your company run more efficiently?
  • Are you an expert? While you need to be competent at the skills required you also need to go beyond the general information and share why you are an expert at your job. If you haven’t already, start a blog on the subject and share it on your resume. This kind of modern social networking is important into today’s job market.
