When you’re on the job market, everything you do will be evaluated and taken into account as part of the hiring decision. This includes all the little things like your body language and manners. Consider some of the small things that you do, perhaps out of habit with little to no thought, and view them as someone outside might see you. Here are six little things that will make big impressions.

  1. How do you enter a room? The way you enter a room says a lot about your personality. Are you gregarious or timid? Are you thoughtful to others in the room? Will you hold the door for someone else entering or exiting? Start to look at the way you enter a room and determine if the body language you are communicating is the right message for employers.
  2. How do you dress? Casual dress is becoming very common in the workplace but there is a distinct line between casual and sloppy. Are your clothes clean, wrinkle free, and in good repair? Do you pay attention to what you’re putting together for an outfit? Dress codes can sometimes be easier in professional environments where the rules are quite clear.
  3. How do you speak to others? Your tone of voice says as much about you as the words that you use. How are you communicating with others around you? Remember, a hiring manager is going to speak to the front desk receptionist about your presentation when you arrived, so be kind and courteous.
  4. How do you introduce yourself and others? Introductions have become a bit of a lost art. When you meet someone new, how do you react? Do you present a firm handshake and state your name? Do you make sure you introduce anyone who is with you? Do you repeat someone’s name to commit it to memory? All of these things say a lot about you as a professional.
  5. How do you exchange business cards? Giving business cards to other professionals is one of the best ways to make new contacts and your employer will expect you to be comfortable with the practice. Even while you’re searching for a job it is a good idea to have personal business cards so you can continue to network. What is your presentation style?
  6. How do you drive? You may not have considered this a factor for employment, but every part of your personality will be evaluated. Potential employers may be looking at your car in their parking lot during your interview. Is it messy? Is it damaged? When you leave their parking lot, are you aggressive? All of these things can be determining factors for potential managers.
