The business world has seen a lot of change in the last few decades. The 1950s image of the ideal work place we saw on television has been replaced by remote working and enhanced technology. Human resources, recruiting, and hiring all need to adapt to the evolving workplace at a rapid pace. Here are four trends you can’t miss in 2014.

  • Marketing rather than recruiting. There was a time when hiring was all about what a candidate could provide to your business. That has changed. Today, businesses need to be as focused on what they can offer the employees who come on board with their organization. This is all part of developing an employer branding strategy that can bring the right candidates to you.
  • Embracing mobile technology. An astounding 70% of job seekers use mobile devices to help them find jobs. This means if you aren’t tapping into that market you are missing out on a vast majority of qualified candidates. Work with your web developers to make sure that your website and application process is easily accessed through smart phones and tablets.
  • Engaging and retaining millennial employees. Young workers, those a part of Generation Y, are entering the workforce at a very high volume. As it turns out, these Millennials are looking for a vastly different working experience than their parents or grandparents. They aren’t interested in just jobs but in challenging and interesting work. They like to collaborate and use technology at a level not seen in previous generations.
  • Engaging and retaining boomer employees. On the other end of the spectrum are the baby boomers that are either not ready to or unable to retire. The census bureau estimates that in 2014 nearly 40 million workers are between the ages of 55 and 64. It is important to understand the role that older workers play in your organization and the kind of work/life balance they need in their lives. Tap into their knowledge as mentors for the entering Millennials.
