Have you ever Googled yourself? This is a great way to see how others generally perceive you by looking at your online image. Your personal brand is made up of your work history, your online profiles, and your ability to sell your own skills. As an administrative professional it is imperative that you understand your personal brand and ensure that you are being viewed as a quality candidate. Here are a few tips.

  • Evaluate your social media. The first step is to know what is out there about you. Review all your social media and lock down any missing privacy settings. For example, many people will use LinkedIn as their public and professional network while reserving Facebook for personal connections. However, if your privacy settings aren’t up to date you may inadvertently display information to the wrong people.
  • Create a website or blog. In today’s digital communications age blogging is one of the best ways to get your message out to an audience. Buy your own domain name to prevent it from ever being used in a negative way. For example, you would buy the site with your first and last name such as MarySmith.com. Use this to create an online resume, portfolio, and blog that you can include on your resume and LinkedIn page.
  • Review your resume. A resume should be a living document. Far too often professionals will ignore their resume while they are employed but when they find themselves back in the job market they need to hunt for important information. LinkedIn makes it easy to keep your details up to date even if you’re not currently looking for a job.
  • Create a cover letter template. One of the worst bits of job search advice is to ignore the cover letter. Since most resumes are submitted electronically the cover letter has taken on new life. When you attach your resume to an email use the body of the email to engage the reader and convince them that they need to talk with you about this open job.
