It isn’t difficult to imagine that the holidays can be a time of employee stress and burnout. Even management is susceptible to the stresses of the season. The demands on our time have increased, there are more family and friend obligations out of the office, and even the joyful aspects of the holiday season call to us more than year-end reports and client care. So how do you spot the signs of employee burn out and what can you do about it? Here are some things to consider.

  • Simply ask. The best way to determine if you’re employees are experiencing burnout is to simply ask. It is highly unlikely that your staff will let you know that they are frustrated and exhausted. Don’t be afraid to check in with them to see how they are doing and if they are feeling comfortable or exasperated by their jobs.
  • Common signals. You may start to notice that your employees are taking excessive sick days. Are they really sick or are they just sick of work? Other signs include irritability, extreme stress responses over small situations, procrastination, and negativity.
  • Lead by example. The best way to stem employee productivity issues is to lead by example. Be a manager who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty and take on important aspects of the business even if they aren’t specifically your job. Also, don’t show that you are stressed, don’t procrastinate, and don’t take excessive time off yourself.
  • What to do now. If you have spotted signs of employee burnout this time of year, what can you do about it? Hold regular meetings to check in with everyone but make sure the meetings are causing the problem. Be sure to provide praise for excellent work and positive reinforcement. You can make corrections as needed but try not to dwell on the negatives. Finally, the best thing you can do is ensure that your team feels comfortable communicating with you.
