A qualified administrative assistant is the backbone that holds a company together. However, many of the administrative resumes that cross hiring managers’ desks are bland and repetitive. How can you stand out as an administrative assistant without sounding overqualified? Here are some of the top achievements and requirements that employers are looking for on resumes.

  • Up to date with computers and tools. Proficiency is key but so are the newest versions of the software. Microsoft products change and update so quickly that it is imperative that you have experience with the latest versions or even the last two or three. Don’t assume you can fake this because it will eventually become apparent.
  • Excellent communications skills. An administrative assistant will be responsible for a lot of communication at all levels. You have to be good at composition and proofreading as well as verbal communication. You need to demonstrate this in writing on your resume as well as over the phone during the initial screening.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills. Look at the duties you had in your past jobs. Where were you most effective in organizing your office, job, or manager’s time? This is essential information for your resume. Include as much data as you can that shows how your skills saved the company time and money or some other benchmark.
  • An internal and external service mindset. An administrative assistant will often be the face of the company to outside customers or clients as well as business partners and internal management. You must always have a customer service mindset. There isn’t anything that you can’t do and won’t do and you should demonstrate this in your resume.
