Time is money, right? In your business, can you afford for your team to waste time while they’re working in your office? You may not even know whether or not your staff is wasting time on the job. Here are a few things you can ask yourself to determine if your employees are being productive or working to their full potential and capacity.

  1. Do you check in regularly?
You can’t know what your team is doing if you don’t ask. However, it is also important that you don’t cross the line to micromanagement. Establish times for your team to check in with you and make it quick. Give them the authority to do their jobs and only step in if something isn’t accurate or complete.
  2. Are they engaged on the job?
One tell-tale sign that your team is wasting time is when you observe them being distant or disengaged from their job. Are they feeling challenged enough? Do they still like what they do? Instead of imposing rules, try to find out what is making them unhappy and correct it. You will see a change in their overall performance.
  3. What is their focus?
Are they focused on innovation or procedure? Whether or not they excel at their job will depend on if they are doing the right job for their personality. While procedure is important, a creative person would rather do anything else but paperwork. Instead, hire staff that compliments one another and who can work together to both innovate and stay on track.
  4. What do they do on their downtime?
As a manager, you’re fooling yourself if you believe that your employees will be dedicated and focused on their work for nine hours a day, every day. There is always downtime. However, there are more effective ways to handle downtime. Do they talk amongst themselves? Do they browse the internet? Do they find other projects to do when things are slow?
