Does your resume say all the right things to land you the best administrative position? Administrative assistant jobs encompass a wide variety of job duties, and people with diverse backgrounds find themselves qualified for these types of roles. Long gone are the days of the sitcom secretary just fetching coffee for the executives. Whether you’re a seasoned administrative professional or you want to transition your skills to a support role, it is critical that your resume says the right things to attract an employer’s attention. Here are a few things your resume needs in order to land that administrative position you’re looking for.

  • Quantitative data. It is becoming increasingly more important to ensure that your resume includes numbers that directly translate to success in your previous jobs. Employers are looking for a solution to their problem, not just another person in the office. Show your worth literally by referencing money or hours saved or spent that would impress a potential employer.
  • Transferable skills. If you haven’t done admin work before but want to transition into this type of position, you need to demonstrate how the work you’ve done in the past will transfer. The good news is that almost everyone has done their own administrative support at some point in their career. Be explicit about what you’ve done in your career that directly translates.
  • Matching keywords. Another great resume tip is to use the same language the company uses in their marketing materials and job descriptions. When customizing your resume for the specific job, pull keywords from the job posting to match your skills. Be careful not to overuse them to make it sound unnatural.
  • Genuine interest. Finally, the most important thing you can prove to a potential employer is that you are interested in their job and their company, not just any job. Research what the company does and include any similar experience or interest in your resume. This will show them that you have skills and experience in common with their company values.
