Labor Day is coming up, which means the kids will be back in school and fall is right around the corner. While our thoughts may be turning to pumpkin spiced lattes, football season, and Halloween, we should be thinking about retention rates in the office. Before Fall brings the changing leaves, make a plan to keep your employees happy and engaged for the rest of the year. Here are some tips.

  1. Know why employees leave. You may not always recognize them, but there are probably patterns when it comes to employees who resign from your company. Of course, sometimes it is perfectly normal. If your employees are all around the same age, you may see people leaving to start a family or move to a new city. If the resignations are negative, you really should evaluate the factors and make important changes to help keep your staff happy and engaged.
  2. Let your team be your ambassadors. Happy employees are great brand ambassadors, and you probably don’t even have to encourage them to spread the news. Don’t restrict your employees’ use of social media, except to encourage them to keep negative behaviors or thoughts away from their posts about the company. Positive media about your organization will encourage the next wave of employees who will want to work for your company.
  3. Focus on corporate culture. You should make your company a place where everyone wants to work. Look at your office environment. Are there improvements that could make your team happier? What about your corporate mission statement and company goals? Are you able to provide perks and benefits that make your employees happy? Be sure to pay special attention to your staff’s work-life balance.
  4. Lead by example. Finally, you can never expect your team to behave positively if you don’t provide a positive example. Employees are loyal to managers who are loyal to them. They also want to work for someone who is equally as happy and engaged with their work. Of course, anyone can have a bad day, but if you’re having trouble staying positive every day you may want to look inward for solutions that will affect your entire team.
