The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is not just a thing crooners emphasized in classic Christmas carols. It’s very real. Shopping, cooking, baking, decorating, and visiting are all integral parts of most people’s holiday plans. You may even find yourself traveling much of the next two months as families become scattered across the country, but make sure to reconvene during the holidays. As an administrative job seeker, how can you organize your search before the stress of the holiday season rushes in? Let’s take a closer look.

  1. Don’t take a break.
While it may feel like all of the businesses are taking a break from hiring right now; in truth, they’re not. The holidays can be distracting, but now is actually the best time to keep applying for jobs. Why? Because other people think they shouldn’t be looking for jobs during the holidays either. You may have less competition.
  2. Rewrite your resume.
This is a good time to reevaluate your resume. Especially if you’ve been on the job hunt for a little while your resume might be getting stale. Spice it up a little bit. Look at creative resume styles that still fit your job search and types of positions for which you’re applying. Don’t forget to have a few people look it over for feedback.
  3. Network at social gatherings.
If nothing else, the holidays are a great time to get out and be social. So use this experience for your job search. When you’re attending festive gatherings, even with friends and family, be sure to tell people you’re on the job market. You never know who will be there and who might know someone who knows someone.
  4. Hit the holiday sales.
Another great use of this time of year is to buy some new interviewing clothes. Things will be on sales in department stores across the metro area and even online. Look for a new professional suit or some mix-and-match clothes that will become part of your professional wardrobe once you’re hired.
  5. Schedule interviews.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to schedule interviews around the holidays. For the same reason as tip number one, other people might want to wait until after the first of the year before they meet with a potential employer. If you get in sooner, you’ll be remembered. You may even be offered the job before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve!
