Not everyone was born to be a manager. And not everyone who finds themselves in a leadership role expected to be there. So, how can you keep your cool and be a solid manager when you’re not entirely confident in your own experience? Before you panic or avoid the situation altogether, there are some easy things you can do that can help you breathe easier in your management role, even as a beginner. Here are our suggestions:

  • Be very specific.
The biggest issue any employee has with their manager is they feel that communication is not effective. Don’t be afraid to be very specific about the outcome you want to achieve. When you give vague directions and assume everyone will be able to figure out what will happen, you’ll be very disappointed when it doesn’t go according to plan — and your employees will be disappointed in your “unrealistic” expectations.
  • Trust your team.
That being said, you also need to trust your team. It is fine to be specific in your communications, but once you allow your team to start to work on a project, you need to trust them to complete it to your satisfaction … even if they take steps you wouldn’t have chosen. Micromanagement can be as frustrating as poor communication for employees, and even scare away those who would otherwise act as top performers.
  • Be brave.
When you find yourself in a management position, you also need to embrace your new found sense of authority. Don’t be afraid to make decisions that impact others. Don’t be afraid to seek out other opinions. Don’t be afraid to try new things or to risk potential failure. As a manager, you need be brave about being in a visible position.
  • Develop new habits.
Finally, it is time to let go of some of your old habits as an employee, and develop new things that will help you grow as a manager. If you’re not sure what those might be, find a mentor and ask them how they became the leader they are today. They can help you with their stories, be a sounding board, and an accountability group.
