Employees who want to quit their jobs are often coached not to burn bridges. But does the same advice apply to managers who are facing the task of firing employees? In fact, many experts would suggest it is even more important for a manager to treat an outgoing employee with respect when they are the ones pulling the plug.

So, how can you fire someone from your company without making them an enemy? Here are a few suggestions.

  • Never come out of left field.
Firing an employee should never be a decision based on pure emotion. The employee in question should have been given ample warnings to improve their performance along the way. In this case, when you do resort to termination, they should actually see it coming if they have not been able to turn themselves around in the time given.
  • Involve the HR department.
If your company has an HR department, make sure that you involve them in every step of your decision. This way you can ensure that you are meeting any requirements that your business has created, or are staying within the bounds of your state’s employment laws.
  • Remain calm.
When you let an employee go, don’t allow your frustration or anger come through in your communications. Don’t yell or accuse the employee of anything. Simply state your reasons for termination and, if they get defensive, hold your ground and remain calm and polite. They may get upset, but that is all the more reason for you to remain steady.
  • Keep it private.
Do not terminate an employee in front of the rest of your staff. This should always be a private meeting involving you, the employee, and a representative of the human resources department. When you fire someone with an audience, you are inviting controversy, rumor, and argument.
  • Be empathetic.
Finally, be sure to tap into your empathy when you terminate an employee. Let them know in any way you can that you understand what they’re feeling, but do so without being patronizing. Chances are you’ve been in a similar position in the past and can relate on some level, so use that feeling to make sure you are sensitive in your communications.
