No matter how hard you try, feeling overwhelmed sometimes is inevitable. Stress is a natural part of life, both good and bad, but what really matters is how you deal with it. If you’re starting to feel things spiraling out of control in your marketing job, consider these five tips to help keep yourself afloat and save yourself from drowning.

  1. Disconnect from technology. You’re just going to check that one email, right? What if it is something important? It could be, but if you’re no longer at work or on the clock, it can also wait. Turn off your phone after hours so you can concentrate on other interests or spend time with your family or friends.
  2. Make a list. Another trick that helps people keep from feeling overwhelmed is to make a list of everything you need to do. Break down the challenges into easily accomplished tasks. Then, each time you finish a portion, you can cross it off and move on to the next step. This can keep you from getting lost in the bigger picture.
  3. Get outside. There is nothing more calming than a warm summer day. Gaze at the white, puffy clouds in the clear blue sky. Nature is a powerful stress-reliever, so take advantage of it when you can. Go for a walk. Sit in the grass. Even a five or ten-minute break can be enough to recharge your batteries.
  4. Do something else. It may seem counterproductive, but the human brain is a complex machine and switching gears can sometimes help you focus better. When a project is overwhelming, set it aside. Work on something else for a while. This could be work related or it could be a complete diversion into a hobby.
  5. Ask for help. It isn’t uncommon for people to remain stubborn and want to prove they can complete a task on their own. But there is no shame in asking for help when you’re feeling stuck. A fresh perspective can be all it takes to restart a stalled project. Even just confiding in someone else can help you work out your frustrations productively.
