Clients love candidates who have done their homework. They want to see that you know what their company does and that you are genuinely interested in their business. In order to make a great first impression, you may want to consider some additional questions in the interview. Here are four questions you should be asking every time you find yourself sitting across from a hiring manager:

  1. “What can I accomplish in my first month on the job?”
You are ready to work. Even though you know that you’ll need to be trained in the specifics of the company, you want to hit the ground running. You are a self-starter and you want to take action. You may even learn best by doing. This question shows your employer that you’re eager to start, and affords them the opportunity to give you a picture of their expectations.
  1. “What traits do your employees have in common?”
You want to fit in with the team. You want to know that the others in your department have the same values that you bring to the company. You also want to understand whether or not the team in place will help you learn the ropes in the company and be successful. You may also learn more about the people you will be working with, which can give you some insight on the company overall.
  1. “How does the company make money?”
Hiring a superstar employee is an investment for the company. No matter what role you’re in, it has some part in the profit-making aspect of the organization. Where does your role fit into this dynamic? You want to show them that you’re interested in their bottom line because the more money the company makes the bigger benefit it will have for your career.
  1. “What are the future plans for the company?”
Employers don’t want to hire someone who is content to stay in the same role forever. They want someone who wants to grow within the organization. When you’re interviewing, you should also be concerned about the upward mobility with the company. Ask them about their long-term vision – both for you and for the company – and apply it to your goals for the future.
