The first day on the job can be both thrilling and terrifying at the same time. If you’re the new office manager, the pressure can be intense. Your role is very hands-on and accountable to a number of people, and you will be in charge of a number of processes. While you can’t be expected to know everything on day-one, you can be prepared to have the best first day possible.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when you’re starting your next office manager job.

  • Take notes. While you will probably be given some office supplies on your first day, take matters into your own hands and bring a small notepad and pen with you. While you’re learning the ropes, take notes so you can refer to them later and get a better understanding of the expectations, job duties, and other aspects that you’ll be required to know. Often, with an office manager position, your training will be limited and you’ll be expected to learn as you go. Notes are a great way to keep track of important information.
  • Introduce yourself. Since your role will be primarily interactive with multiple levels of employees, take some time to introduce yourself to everyone in the office. Let them know your role, and encourage them to talk to you if they need anything – make it clear that you’ll do your best to help them figure problems out. This will help establish familiarity and give you an opportunity to find out who can help you as well.
  • Be positive. The best thing you can do on your first day is to maintain positivity. An office manager has a lot of pressure, and you will certainly feel overwhelmed at some point. If you remain positive, however, your requests for help will be better received.
  • Ask questions. Lastly, never be afraid to ask questions. They say there are no stupid questions, so it is important that you keep track of your needs – and if you don’t understand something, ask. Big mistakes that happen as a result of not completely understanding a task or policy can lead to huge problems in the long term.
