Do you ever feel like you’re simply going through the motions at work? Do you find yourself saying and doing things that you not only don’t believe, but that also go against your core values? If you’re spending your day feeling like you’re an imposter, it might be time to make a major career change and put yourself in a much better environment. Here are some ways to determine if you’re in the wrong job.

  • You feel isolated. If you feel like you don’t have anyone to talk to, even on a surface level, you may be feeling the effects of job burnout. When you start feeling alone in a crowd you may need to make some drastic changes in your life.
  • You have trust issues. Do you have an issue with the things that your co-workers or managers do? Do you feel like you have to redo work all the time? Or do you just take on too many projects because you don’t trust anyone else to do them right?
  • You can’t share your personal interests. While you don’t have to be best friends with the people you work with, it is helpful to at least have a few things in common. When you are such completely different people it can be difficult to get through the day.
  • Your behavior out of work is different than at work. Do you find that your life is overly compartmentalized? Is your professional personality drastically different than the person you feel you really are inside?
  • You don’t believe in the work. Do you have to struggle to care about the work you do? Do you still not care about it no matter what you tell yourself? If you don’t feel passionate about the work you’re doing it may be very challenging to come with a reason to do it.
  • You know you can’t do this forever. You may not know what you want to be when you grow up, but it sure isn’t this. If you can’t see a future in this career no matter how hard you look, then it is probably time for a major change.
  • You have a short temper. Do you have trouble keeping your emotions in check? Do you find yourself flying off the handle far too quickly? Do you come home in tears more often than not? That is not healthy behavior and it could mean making a big change is essential for your wellbeing.
  • You want to get out but don’t know how. If you keep fantasizing about leaving your job but don’t know where to start, you may be well past time to make a change. Feeling trapped is common but also unhealthy.
