Before you make your next career move, you should consider the “how and why” to connect with a professional recruiter. A recruiter can be your best ally as you search for your next opportunity.

So how do you get started? Before you open the phone book or internet browser, here are some tips that can help you successfully initiate a relationship with a recruiter who can help you.

  • Consider your career trajectory. You need to know where you’re going to know the best way to get there. What have you done to this point? What are your future goals? Once you know this, you can select a recruiter who is a good match for your needs. No two recruiters are the same, so it is important that you work with someone who fits your expectations.
  • Know who the recruiter works for. It is also critical that you understand how recruiting works on a fundamental level. A recruiter’s client is the company, not the employee. You are not charged for their services and you are actually their product. However, that doesn’t mean you will or should be treated poorly. The recruiter has a vested interest in getting you hired.
  • Polish your resume. A recruiter is also not a career coach. You can’t send an unfinished, unpolished resume to their attention and expect them to do the work for you. You must have a good document already in your arsenal before you begin your recruiter search. If you don’t want to hire a professional resume writer, get help and opinions from friends and family or others in your industry.
  • Be in charge of your own future. Finally, recruiters like to work with candidates who are willing to help themselves. A recruiter is merely an additional tool that can help you get to the end goal, but they aren’t the only source. Don’t only rely on their skills to land you your next job. Continue your own job search and treat your recruiter as an ally. And, if you feel that the relationship isn’t helping, move on.
