You’ve decided to go back to school. It could be to learn a specific skill in the hopes that you will be more marketable after graduation. It may be to try something new entirely. Whatever your path, school is a great avenue to get where you want to go. But can you work while you’re back in school? A school schedule can be very demanding, but there are ways to make it work and earn money while you’re taking that next step. Here’s how.

Make a Dedicated Work Space

If you’re going to school, don’t settle for studying at the kitchen table or island. Make sure you have a workspace dedicated to your schoolwork. That will help you get in the right mindset and transition from home life to school life when you need to get to work. If you don’t have a room that can be an office, at least set up a desk and bookshelves in a corner where you won’t be interrupted by your partner, children, or pets.

Learn to Prioritize

If you are working while going to school, it’s important you prioritize your time so you can dedicate the right amount of study time and balance the demands of work and family. It’s OK to set aside specific times of the day to focus on just one of these aspects of your life while you’re going to school.

Practice Self-Care

You also need to spend time on yourself. Self-care is important to maintaining a healthy mental attitude and retain balance. Work, school, and family life are hard, and there’s no way around that. But if you can give yourself just a couple hours to yourself per week, you’ll find you can better maintain the balance.

Communicate With Your Network

You don’t have to do any of this alone. Your family and friends can be there to help. Talk to your partner about helping more around the house or with the children. Talk to your friends about providing some much-needed entertainment away from school and work. Find a mentor who has also worked while going to school, and find out tips and tricks they used that might help you out.

Consider Temporary Work

Work and school are hard, but there are ways to mitigate your stress. One such way is to partner with a staffing agency to find temporary work. Assignment-based work, part-time work, or short-term jobs can all help you better manage your school schedule without the stress of a full-time job.
