No matter how long you have been in the professional job market, your next interview can always feel overwhelming and stressful. The best way to feel confident about your meeting is to prepare for the interview ahead of time. Here are four interview questions that may come up that you should be prepared to answer.

  1. What is your biggest weakness? This can be one of the hardest questions to answer. If you are truly honest about your weakness it might give them a reason not to hire you. On the other hand if you are disingenuous with your answer they may see through it and find a reason not to hire you. Some professionals suggest against turning a strength into a weakness such as, “I sometimes work way too hard; my boss has to make sure I leave at night!” Rather, be genuine in your answer. It is completely fine to admit to a weakness as long as you acknowledge that you need extra help or are working on improvements.
  2. What kind of work environment do you prefer? This question is designed to determine if you will be a good fit within their existing company culture. Do your research on the organization ahead of time to learn if you can see yourself working in their environment. Whatever you do, don’t answer this question by simply parroting their corporate culture back to them. If you accept a position at a business that is the polar opposite your personality you will quickly realize that you don’t belong there and will become dissatisfied and unmotivated.
  3. Tell me about a time… Many companies are employing behavioral questions in their interviewing process. They want to see how you would handle certain situations. It often starts with this phrase but the second half of the question can be anything from, “when you had to deal with an irate customer,” to, “when you worked with a team to implement a new project.” Think about your background, your experience, and your personal values to answer this question.
  4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? This question might be asked in a number of ways. The most important thing an interviewer is looking for is to determine if you want to be with their company for an extended period of time. If you are just looking for a job, any job, then they will be able to see that may not want to be a member of their team. Again, this is where researching the company will come in handy to determine the long term implications on this job for your career.
