The interviewing and hiring process is more about the ability to connect with an interviewer and prove your worth and cultural fit within their company than it is about bringing the exact skills to the table. It is important in order to be considered for a job opportunity to manage the interview process and make the right first impression. Here are three ways you can instantly connect to your interviewer and increase your chances of being considered for the job.

  1. Observe, then imitate. Body language affects the way we interact with each other on a subconscious level. Experts in body language have confirmed that mirroring another person’s gestures increases the connection and rapport between two people. Mirroring should occur naturally and not be force, but it can help to be aware of it. Smile when they smile, nod when they nod. Lean in closer as you’re talking. All of these things can help the interviewer feel more comfortable with you and be more open to what you have to say.
  2. Don’t save your questions for the end. All too often candidates wait until the interviewer asks “do you have any questions for me?” before offering any questions of their own. Rather, an interview should be considered a conversation. Even though it is formal it should also be relaxed and personal. Ask questions as a natural part of the discussion. Allow for an even exchange and give and take between yourself and the interviewer.
  3. Pay attention to the interviewer’s answers. Just as important as asking good questions throughout the interview is actually paying attention to the answers the interviewer gives you. Frequently, candidates will simply pay lip service to the practice without understanding the purpose. Listen to what the interviewer has to say and file it away. When you send your thank you note after the interview, reference what they had to say so they know that you were listening to them and understanding their concerns, needs, or interests.
