Hiring managers need effective interviewing techniques available at their fingertips before meeting with potential employees. The way you ask a question is as important as the answer for determining if a candidate is the right fit for your position. What kinds of questions can give you some insight on a candidate before they start? Here are three questions you should be asking candidates before making a hiring decision:
1. What keeps you motivated?
This question will reach the core of how they work on a daily basis. You need to know how they interact with other team members, what kind of office environment they prefer to work in, and how they stand up in stressful situations. How the employee stays motivated in their job will give insight on how they will fit in with your office environment. For example, if this candidate loves the thrill of last minute deadlines, they may not be a fit for a more laid back office. If the employee prefers to work alone, they won’t enjoy a collaborative workplace.
2. In what aspects of your job do you consider yourself an expert?
Each employee has a different set of skills. Skills are very different from experience. You want to determine what they really want to do, not just what they will do if they are getting paid for it. Someone who loves sales is perfect for customer-facing roles. Someone who likes special projects might get bored easily with repetitive tasks. What they really want to do will give you a better perspective than what they’ve done in the past.
3. Were you satisfied with your last job?
While candidates are coached not to speak negatively about previous employers, what you really want to know is if they felt fulfilled in their career. What keeps them engaged on the job? Ask behavioral questions that will give you an idea of how they will handle specific situations and how they will interact with others. If they weren’t engaged or happy, find out why. Was it too stressful and why? Did they have issues with other employees or their management? These insights will drill down on their suitability with your company.
