You have probably heard that the holidays are a slow time for business hiring. It can be frustrating to take a several week break in December especially when you’ve been on the job market for a while. However, this advice is somewhat outdated. It isn’t that companies aren’t hiring this time of year. The real trick is how to connect with the companies who are anticipating needs for the coming year. Here are a few things you can do to boost your search during the winter.

  • Holiday networking. Do you think holiday parties are all fun and games? Well, in many cases they are but that doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in some networking. Strike up conversations with strangers. Ask them about what they do. Make a connection or offer to make a connection for them with someone else that you know. This will open doors for the future.
  • The path not taken. Since you have heard that the holidays are dead when it comes to hiring it is also likely everyone else is taking that bad advice this time of year. You may have an opportunity to strike while the iron is hot and beat out your competition for jobs that they are missing out on because they aren’t looking.
  • Accounting support. Keep in mind that the beginning of the year marks tax season and many companies are preparing for this. When it comes to administrative support there may be multiple opportunities in the accounting, finance, and tax fields. See out these companies and make connections, send your resume, and follow up.
  • Temporary solutions. If a permanent opportunity doesn’t present itself you may do well to consider temporary jobs. Companies will need temporary employees to fill in for holiday vacations or help with year-end projects. If you do well you may position yourself for a long term opportunity with the same organization.
