It is natural at the beginning of every new year to take stock of the previous one and see what things we’ve learned and lessons can be applied to our lives. What happened in 2014 that provided some insight about hiring and how can we apply this information to a new job search?

Here are some things to keep in mind when you’re looking for your next opportunity:

  • Create a living resume online. Far too often people don’t think about their resume while they’re still employed. This leads to panic when they can’t remember details to include. The good news is that there is already a great tool to keep tabs at all time. The first step is to make a LinkedIn profile. Then you can use this to add all of the accomplishments from your career to create a living resume.
  • Get involved in your community. Another great resume builder, besides your experience and education, is your involvement in your community. Choose a cause or a charity in your area that means something to you and get involved. Organizations are almost always looking for volunteers, so offer them your skills. You also never know who you’re going to meet.
  • Don’t be afraid of social media. LinkedIn isn’t the only social media page you should be using. Too many people are afraid of leaving a digital footprint that they avoid social media altogether. However, companies are beginning to search for this information and if they can’t find anything they may believe that you have something to hide.
  • Focus on accomplishment, not duties. Another key mistake that many job seekers make is to create a resume with a laundry list of their functions. Companies already know they want someone who is capable of the job, what they really want to see is someone who will excel. Let them know how you’ve used your skills to benefit past employers.
  • Be willing to take risks and even fail. Don’t be afraid to take some risks in your career. The most successful people have been willing to risk failure to accomplish their goals. Apply to a job even if you aren’t sure you’ll qualify. Take a class in something you’ve always wanted to do. Try new things as often as possible.
