The internet is crammed full of advice for job seekers, but it is never too late to hear more ideas. Every suggestion can help you hone your search, plan your goals, and steer your career.

Here are the 10 most critical pieces of advice that we feel every job seeker needs to know before moving on.

  1. Write a perfect cover letter. Many job seekers feel that cover letters are no longer relevant, but that is the furthest thing from the truth. A well-crafted cover letter will give the reviewer a reason to read your resume.
  2. Learn to negotiate salary. Money is difficult topic to discuss, but it is essential when you’re working with a new employer. First, research the range for the type of job in your area. Then be firm in that range and don’t accept less. You also do not need to disclose your salary history.
  3. Master the art of the thank-you note. Another important aspect of communication that is underutilized is the thank-you note. Send one after your interview with a potential employer. You can email it the same day or send a card by mail.
  4. Learn to effectively network. Networking is scary, especially when you’re introverted. If you’re having trouble start online with tools like LinkedIn. Then, get involved with local organizations and volunteer so you have a job to do.
  5. Stay organized at your desk. Once you accept a job, your work doesn’t stop there. Now is the time to make the right impression. Staying organized is a top priority so you don’t risk letting important aspects of your job fall through the cracks.
  6. Work well with others. Even if you consider yourself a team player, you will inevitably come across some personalities that rub you the wrong way. It is important to learn that you can’t control other people’s behavior, only your reactions to them.
  7. Learn to take initiative. Do you want to be recognized for your work and given more advanced opportunities? The best way to do that is to volunteer for additional projects. You don’t have to bite off more than you can chew, but take initiative in the office.
  8. Manage your stress levels. When you feel your blood pressure rising in the office, take a moment to step away from the situation. Walk outside, take a break, and come back with a clear head so you can be more objective.
  9. Focus on work-life balance. To this end, it is equally as important that you recognize that your life outside of work is equally as important. Turn off your digital devices when you’re spending time with your friends and family.
  10. Get over the guilt of vacations. Many employees, especially when they’re new, are worried about not being seen as committed if they want to take time off work. Studies show that time away from work makes workers more productive overall so don’t feel guilty.
