That job should have been yours, right? You’ve done everything you’re supposed to do to advance your career … and still you were passed up for the promotion. Why?

There are a lot of reasons that employees miss out on advancement opportunities. Some of them are out of your control, but many are not. How can you learn from this experience to improve for the future? Here are some important tips to help you land your next promotion.

  • You didn’t demonstrate as much value.
Sometimes the hiring manager has to work by a matter of degrees. All of the candidates may be equally qualified and all may be well liked, but something need to tip the scales. In these cases, the candidate who has most demonstrated their value to the organization ends up being chosen for a promotion. You can do this too. Every job opening is a problem and it is your job to be the solution. Figure out their pain points in the new department and target yourself as the best way to relieve them.
  • You did not effectively communicate your interest.
An interview should be a give-and-take — even when you already work for the company. You talk about how your skills apply to the new role, and they tell you about the benefits they’ll provide when they transition you. Now your next move is to let them know that you’re interested. You already know the company and the office environment, so explain how you will enhance it in the new position. Be genuinely excited about the job. If you’re not, someone else will be.
  • The company’s goals were not more important than your own.
Lastly, you need to understand that while your long-term career goals are important to your employer, their goals are also critical. Specifically, they want to promote an employee who continues to see themselves with their company in five or 10 years. They do not want to invest in someone who is only looking for another stepping stone.
