Have you been working in the administrative field and wondering where to take your career? Administrative assistants are versatile and often underappreciated. However, there are many roles that benefit from a strong support background. While you’re editing your resume for your next job opportunity consider these places your career as an executive assistant can take you.

  • Private companies and corporations.
This is probably the most expected path for an executive assistant. Many people just assume the natural career choice is to support a C-Level executive. Generally these types of jobs have good stability and excellent benefits. However, there can also be high expectations and the hours can become excessive.
  • Universities and other academic institutions.
If education has always been your passion you may want to consider a career in academia, but outside of teaching. Schools at all levels need administration support and your background in other roles can give you a leg up within the field. The primary benefit is generally long term job security.
  • Small businesses and start-ups.
If you’re more of a risk taker you may want to consider working with a small business or start-up company. This role will be similar to that of the C-Level executive assistant but may also have multiple components since employees wear many hats. These jobs come with some volatility because you never know if they will succeed and the hours can be just as long as a corporate environment, but the reward is excellent experience.
  • Local government.
Maybe you prefer to have you hand in local politics. Government offices, even at the smallest level, have a strong need for administrative support. There are few industries more organized with bureaucratic and clerical needs. The position tend to pay less than private industry but they have stability and good hours.
  • Temporary staffing companies.
Flexibility may be more important for you so if that is the case temporary administrative assignments could be a perfect fit. Staffing agencies assist their clients with long and short term placements. They may have someone out on a medical leave and they need an experienced admin to fill the gap. If you like to work on your terms this could be an excellent arrangement.
