Your company culture will be the backbone of everything your organization does. It will inform every aspect of what you do from your mission statement to your final product. Do you know what your company culture is? And, if not, how do you determine what your culture is, or who you are as a company? Defining who you are is an important step to providing the best service or products you can. Here are some easy tips to review what you have to offer and put your company culture into words.

  • What would the newspaper say about you?
One exercise to determine how your culture would be perceived by outside sources is to pretend a reporter is doing a story on your corporation. What would they have to say to present you in a positive way? What would they need to include that would best describe your company and the people who work for you.
  • Google the company.
On a more practical note, have you ever tried Googling your company? The trick is to log out of any Google accounts before you start. Check out what is on the top five pages. Do you have positive information or is there anything negative? What could you do in your company to change these negative perceptions?
  • Talk to customers and employees.
You can also get the information right from the source. Talk to your employees to find out what they love about their jobs. This will give you some great insight on what your company culture really is. Alternately, talk with your customers about what they take away from their experiences with you and your representatives.
  • Know what isn’t right.
Finally, it is also important to understand when something is unhealthy about your corporate culture. Look for warning signs of something becoming negative or difficult to maintain. A good corporate culture should never bend ethics in the wrong direction or be exclusive to outsiders. If you see any of these emerging in your culture, make changes immediately.
