As job seekers we are often told to spend time preparing for an interview, but what about your resume? Have you ever sat down and really assessed yourself and your job search before writing this extremely important document? A resume is your first impression so you have to make it matter. Consider these questions when determining what exactly to say about yourself.

  1. What am I really looking for? What job are you targeting? It is important to keep your job search focused so you don’t run off the rails. This doesn’t have to mean a specific job title but more about what you’re looking for in a company and a career. What are your primary talents? What do you like to do with them? How do you feel you could contribute to an organization? Think about your perfect position and aim your resume in that direction.
  2. How has my career progressed so far? It is important for your future employer to see how you have contributed to your previous companies and why you can make a difference for them. Evaluate your career path and look at patterns in the way it has grown. How has your career made you a better person? The you that you were when you were 23 and just out of college is a very different you than you are now. How has your career path changed you as a person?
  3. What kind of work environment makes me successful? It is extremely important that you are honest with yourself about what kind of company you want to work for. You can’t shoehorn your personality into a business that is all wrong. Do you like fast paced environments? Would you prefer a professional office over a casual one? Would you rather work for a large corporation or a small company?
  4. What kinds of marketable skills do I have? Now assess your specific skills and think through the reasons why a company might want to hire you for them. Did you excel at saving money for your department? Are you an organizational expert who can trim the excess fat off the business? Are you a stellar customer service provider who consistently receives excellent reviews?
